MALAYSIAN entrepreneurs and companies will have the chance to gain recognition and share their success stories at the upcoming 4th Golden Entrepreneur Award and 2nd Malaysia Brand Award.

Applications are now open for the event scheduled for December.

Both awards are organised by Federation of Malaysia Chinese Guilds Association (Femacga), endorsed by the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti), and co-organised by TusStar.

In his speech at the launch in Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Femacga president Lum Kim Soong said this was the most important project by the association.

He said there were many outstanding products and brands in Malaysia but many companies maintained a low profile.

He cited Nirvana Asia Group founder and executive chairman Tan Sri Kong Hon Kong who revolutionised the bereavement service.

“We hope that with this award, these brands and companies can gain recognition not just locally but internationally.

“We think we should share their success story so others can learn from them,” he said.

He added that over the years, Femacga had presented the Golden Entrepreneur Award to 59 successful entrepreneurs since the award’s inception.

“One of the criteria is the applicant’s own moral character and the company’s integrity. We want someone that others can look up to and the company should not have questionable practices,” he said.

Chew Swee Hoo, organising chairman for the fourth Golden Entrepreneur Award, believes both awards can help small and medium-sized enterprises in Malaysia to set longer-term goals and boost their confidence and vision.

“This will enable them to compete internationally so that they can steadily create a lasting presence in Malaysia as they expand into the world.”

Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Dr Ong Kian Ming was invited to the launch as the guest of honour.

He encouraged winners of these awards to “go out and export more”.

“We want them to use the opportunity to make themselves known and increase Malaysian exports to other countries.

“With Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s second visit to Beijing and his supportive comments on Huawei, we see a lot more Chinese investments coming to Malaysia and we want to see how we can facilitate businesses in Malaysia, especially SMEs, to work with these Chinese investors and be part of the supply chain.

“Although China is our largest trading partner, it is still less than 20% of our total trade, there are other attractive markets that we hope to enter such as India, the Middle East and Africa,” he said.

On the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) for the manufacturing sector, he said, “So far we have seen over 400 applications for the readiness assessment and in the first stage, 60 have been approved to undergo the assessment, which will start very soon.

“They will get a report on how to improve. We also want to open up other follow-up funding for IR4.0 so that SMEs can benefit from this IR4.0 journey.”
